The 4Cs of Diamonds
What is the 4c’ ?
The 4Cs system to grade diamonds based on four essential factors: Cut, Color, Clarity, and Carat Weight. Each of these factors plays a significant role in determining the beauty and value of the diamond.
Cut
The cut of a diamond refers to how well it has been shaped and polished. This directly impacts its brilliance, sparkle, and overall appearance. A well-cut diamond will reflect light beautifully, creating that unmistakable sparkle. Cuts are graded from Excellent to Poor, with Excellent cut diamonds showcasing maximum brilliance.
Color
Diamonds come in a range of colors, with the most valuable being completely colorless. The color scale ranges from D (completely colorless) to Z (light yellow or brown). Colorless diamonds are rarer and, therefore, more valuable. However, even slightly color E to X diamonds can be beautiful and affordable.
Clarity
Clarity measures the purity and uniqueness of the diamond by identifying internal imperfections (inclusions) and external blemishes. The clarity scale ranges from Flawless (no visible inclusions or blemishes) to Included (inclusions that are noticeable under magnification). Higher clarity diamonds are rare and command higher prices.
Carat
WeightCarat is the unit used to measure the weight of a diamond. While larger diamonds are rarer and more expensive, carat weight alone doesn’t determine a diamond’s value. The overall beauty of a diamond is a combination of carat weight along with cut, color, and clarity.
